It took a while before I was willing to put money down on a suppressor. Most people think they're whisper quiet, but the reality is far from that. Sure, if you're using some heavy, expensive subsonic loads you can get it down to the volume level equivalent of a violent sneeze on anything 9mm caliber or higher.
I find the real advantage with suppressing weapons is it makes it easier for my wife and kids to tolerate shooting some of my handguns and sub-guns. Instead of being "scary" and causing a nervous twitch, it brings the noise level down to where it's tolerable. The added weight also reduces the recoil. My wife actually enjoyed shooting my Walther PPQ, and my kids had fun watching me shoot a chunk of wood.
I had previously scoffed at the idea of getting a suppressor for my AR, but after the reactions from everyone else I'm reconsidering it. While it may not be beneficial to me, I think it would be far more beneficial for my wife and kids, to ease them into shooting ARs. Now I just need to start saving. 😆
