Over the past couple of months I've been perfecting techniques to restore damaged Pokémon cards. It's not only a fascinating process for me, but a great way to add expensive cards to my collection at a discount, because someone else lacked the time or knowledge to restore it to a better condition.
A lot of dents and small creases can be fixed with humidity and pressure. These foam mats that I use for introducing controlled humidity are actually a roll of foam toolbox liner that I cut into 6"x6" squares and costs $11 on Amazon. The whole roll yields about 38 pads total, and they can be reused multiple times.
I typically use acrylic plates for pressing. I can usually remove dents or creases with a little bit of humidity on the pads for 30-60 minutes, then press the card out in a penny sleeve like this for 24 hours, pressed between two sheets of vinyl.
You wouldn't believe it, but this card had water damage running from top to bottom down the back, in about a 1/2 inch strip. I humidified the card slightly and after 24 hours you can't even tell it was damaged! I'll give it another 24 hours to dry out.
Sometimes the card will still have a curve to it. As a final step, I'll typically run the card in the heat press between two plates and a set of pads, to allow any remaining moisture to evaporate and allow the card to completely flatten.
It's not a fast process, but you can take a card worth $100+ that you find "damaged," pick it up cheap for maybe $20 and then restore it. I like it as a cheaper way to add to the collection without breaking the bank.
