My boys and I recently got into collecting Pokémon cards. Some of the older ones you find are bent, slightly worn, creased, etc. These days you can do a lot to restore these cards, which is a great way to build a collection inexpensively.
One of these restoration methods involves a heat press to remove dents and creases. They're not terribly expensive at $100, but I didn't want to dedicate the space if I didn't have to. So, I tried it my way.
I needed heat, so I got heat in the form of a temperature-controlled coffee mug warmer.
I needed to protect the card, so I bought some supplies to help the card keep its shape while undergoing the heat press process.
Next, I needed pressure. I figured a 15 pound weight would do the trick, with a ceramic baking dish to help evenly distribute the heat across the acrylic plates.
Sadly, it didn't work. I'll post more about this in detail later, but I'll end up having to buy that heat press anyway. Oh well. It was worth a try.
I'll bring the coffee mug warmer to work and chock it up to a learning experience. 🤷♂️
