I don't necessarily think it should mainly be about market conditions. I think it's more about the Splinterlands product just not being ready yet, which you discussed as well. It's hard to recruit any players outside of the "early adopter" type. We need a much more user friendly experience (both the game and the economy) before we grab the attention of casual players.
