Hey beer lovers! Welcome to my participation in the #BeerSaturday Challenge, week #472. For this challenge, I want to nominate my esteemed friend @biologistbrito, who, like me, is a biologist and showcases the beautiful landscapes of Portugal on his blog every week! So, I'm extending this nomination to him so he can share a typical beer from those Lusitanian lands.

For my part, even though I'm in the Caribbean, I took advantage of the World Cup Final to try a Spanish beer for the first time: Estrella Galicia! I prepared myself well to enjoy this final match, which was undoubtedly high-tension, with the reigning champions, Argentina, facing a technically skilled Spain team that had already shown they were improving. So I made sure to stock up on beer, since there were several of us at home and the dry season heat was starting to kick in again.

I'd seen Estrella Galicia every time I went shopping for beer, but it's really expensive, which always discouraged me, and I'd choose something else. But this time, something motivated me to buy it. First, I was supporting Spain in the World Cup and wanted to have something to show my support while I enjoyed the game. Second, a Venezuelan friend and colleague of Spanish descent decided to live there, and like me, she's a huge fan of Deportivo La Coruña, which, coincidentally, is where this beer originated! That's right, friends, fate aligned all these coincidences for this moment, so I didn't think twice and bought two of these beers. They cost $4 each here in Venezuela.

From the start, I was pretty sure this match was going to be close. Both teams were very good, and the difference would most likely come down to capitalizing on the opponent's mistakes, no matter how small. So, to warm up, I started with an ice-cold Heineken because the game started being broadcast here at 3 pm, and the afternoon heat was already setting in. The problem is that with the humidity coming off the coast, the heat feels even hotter, and the first thing you want to do is cool down with a good beer.

As you can see, I'm a man of traditions and old habits, so since the World Cup started, I've watched most of the matches on my old CRT TV. I've only enjoyed watching games on the LED when I'm with friends from work, but at home, my brother, nephew, and I watch the games the old-fashioned way. So, we proceeded to pour a cold Heineken while the first half unfolded, which, just as we expected, ended without any major plays, very tight, although Spain was showing more intent to score.

We finished enjoying this beer at the halftime show, which was undoubtedly unforgettable! Starting with Madonna's appearance alongside legends Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, and including Gustavo Dudamel, a fellow Venezuelan, adding to the spectacle! Amidst so many complaints about the poor logistics of the World Cup and the refereeing throughout the tournament, I must admit that at least in the final they did things right.

The match remained electrifying in the second half; neither team would give an inch. I took the opportunity to pull our special beer, Estrella Galicia, out of the freezer! As I mentioned before, this beer is from Galicia, Spain, but it's not the standard version. This beer is a gluten-free version that maintains the flavor of a classic golden lager.

When I tasted it, the first thing I noticed was how smooth it was, with good carbonation and detectable floral/herbal notes. In other words, despite being gluten-free, this beer doesn't have an artificial flavor; it truly retains the taste of a classic golden lager. Another major difference is its lower alcohol content, at 5.5%, making it quite easy to enjoy. In fact, I don't think I fully appreciated it because the ideal pairing would have been with some "tapas," a kind of snack made with bread and grated tomato.

My mother enjoyed this beer the most; I didn't tell her it was gluten-free, and she drank every last drop! Now she wants to try the Estrella Galicia red or vintage, which they call "Colorada." I enjoyed it too, right up until extra time, because the score was tied for the full 90 minutes plus added time. In the end, Spain won in the second half of extra time to end the match, and the excitement exploded at home as we finished off the Estrella Galicia. It was definitely one of those unforgettable moments that everyone here in Caracas celebrated, and in our case, what better way to celebrate than with a beer that exudes pure tradition, like Estrella Galicia. Que tal comunidad cervecera! Les doy la bienvenida a mi participación en el #BeerSaturday Challenge en su semana #472, para este challenge quiero nominar a mi estimado @biologistbrito que al igual que yo es biólogo y cada semana nos muestra desde su blog los bellos paisajes de Portugal! Así que le extiendo esta nominación para que nos comparta alguna cerveza típica de esas tierras lucitanas.

Yo por mi parte, aunque estoy en el caribe he aprovechado el momento de la gran final de la Copa del Mundo para degustar por primera vez una cerveza de tierras españolas, se trata de la cerveza Estrella Galicia! Me preparé muy bien para disfrutar de este último partido que sin duda era de alta tensión, 2 equipos el campeón del torneo anterior argentina enfrentando a una técnica España que ya venía demostrando que venía creciendo en su juego. Me aseguré entonces de surtirme muy bien de cervezas ya que además que éramos varios en casa y nuevamente el calor de esta temporada seca ya se estaba haciendo sentir.

Esta marca Estrella Galicia ya la había visto cada vez que iba de compras buscando cervezas, pero el precio de esta marca es realmente costosa, terminaba por desmotivarme y escogía otra opción diferente. Pero en este caso algo especial me movió a comprarla, la primera es que apoyé a España en este mundial y necesitaba llevar algo alegórico mientras disfrutaba del partido y la segunda es algo ya más personal y es que una amiga colega venezolana pero de padres españoles decidió hacer vida allá, y al igual que yo somos fanáticos del Deportivo La Coruña donde casualmente es el origen de esta cerveza! Así es amigos, el destino alineó todas estas coincidencias para este momento, así que no lo pensé 2 veces y compré 2 de estas cervezas, su precio aquí en Venezuela es de 4$ cada una.

Desde el principio tenía bastante claro que este partido iba a estar bastante parejo, los 2 equipos tenían un muy bien nivel y prácticamente la diferencia muy probablemente estaría en saber aprovechar los errores del oponente por más pequeño que fueran. Así que para calentar comencé con una cerveza Heineken bien fría porque el juego comenzó a transmitirse aquí a las 3 pm y ya el calor de la tarde se estaba haciendo sentir, el problema es que con la humedad que llega de la costa, la sensación de calor se magnifica y lo primero que quieres hacer es refrescarte con una buena cerveza.

Como pueden ver, soy un hombre tradiciones y viejas costumbres, así que desde que comenzó el mundial he visto la mayoría de los partidos en mi viejo televisor CRT. Solo he disfrutado de ver partidos en el LED cuando estoy con amigos del trabajo, pero en la intimidad de la casa con mi hermano y sobrino vemos los partidos así a la vieja escuela. Entonces procedimos a servir una fría Heineken mientras transcurría el primer tiempo que tal como esperábamos terminó sin grandes jugadas, muy cerrado aunque España estaba proponiendo mayor intensión de anotar.

Terminamos de disfrutar de esta cerveza en el espectáculo del medio tiempo que sin duda fue algo inolvidable! Empezando por la presencia de Maddona con las leyendas de Ronaldo y Ronaldinho, incluyendo la presencia de Gustavo Dudamel un compatriota venezolano animando el espectáculo! Dentro de tantas denuncias sobre el mal desempeño en la logística del mundial y el arbitraje de los partidos a lo largo de todo el torneo, debo reconocer que al menos en la final hicieron las cosas bien.

El partido seguía electrizante en el segundo tiempo, ninguno de los 2 equipos cedía un palmo, aproveché entonces para sacar del congelador nuestra cerveza especial, la Estrella Galicia! Como mencioné antes, esta cerveza es de Galicia, España pero no es la versión estándar, esta cerveza es una versión sin gluten pero que mantiene el sabor de una clásica lager dorada.

Cuando la probé lo primero que percibí fue lo suave que era, con una buena carbonatación y era detectable las notas florales/herbales que tenía, es decir que a pesar de ser libre de gluten esta cerveza no tiene un sabor artificial, realmente conserva el gusto de una clásica lager dorada. Otras de sus mayores diferencias es que su grado alcohólico es menor, de 5.5% por lo que es bastante fácil de saborear y de hecho creo que no la supe aprovechar porque lo ideal habría sido acompañar esta cerveza con unas "tapas" que es una especie de snack en base a pan y tomate rallado.

Mi madre fue la que más disfrutó de esta cerveza, no le dije que era libre de gluten y se bebió hasta la última gota! Ahora quiere probar la Estrella Galicia roja o vintage que llaman "Colorada", yo también la disfrute hasta que llegó el tiempo extra porque el empate se mantuvo por los 90 minutos + el agregado. Al final España se impuso en la segunda mitad de la prórroga para poner fin a esta justa y la emoción estallo en casa mientras nos terminábamos la Estrella Galicia. En definitiva fue uno de esos momentos inolvidables que todos aquí en la ciudad de Caracas celebramos y en nuestro caso, que mejor que acompañado de una cerveza que transpira pura tradición como lo es Estrella Galicia.
