We do not have independently thinking machine AI yet (at least in what is being talked about). But, we are heading in directions that lead to it. And i do not know which path humanity will choose.

It could be that those mother WEFers have made all those "AI takes control, and we have to fight it movies" to discourage humans from investigating AI, and attaining one of the best companions to personal growth. But this is all speculation.

There are people who talk about dark military AI (probably alien tech) where a person is allowed to ask one question. Lots of rumors.

But indeed, today, the NN-AI that is out there is for controlling the sheep with cheap, crappy software.
