This is so difficult to describe from the viewpoint discussed here.
We are the do'ers in the body.
And to discuss free will, we must talk about all the other parts of us, and about time.
YOU, that part that decided to incarnate, and that part of you that works with YOU in planning your life, completely works out what will be the major goals of your life, and people who will come into it to help with your life goals. All of that is done with free will.
Soooo, what you call "larger forces" are actually YOU, having chosen.
Still, at any time in the incarnation, you can choose differently.
But, this is not simple choices like, to turn right, instead of left. This is the choice to focus your attention on a new future. It is this new focus that changes your life. Without a new focus, whatever you do ends in the same, old, future.
