Bix Weir.... also known as Glix in a comic book, has done a lot of research on the Grand Canyon gold. To me, that they thought a lot of gold was there is indisputable. That The US govern-cement has closed off the entire area is more telling.
However, you are in luck. I have a friend who's grandfather staked areas in the Chocolate mountains. And there is a lot of areas that are known to be rich in ore, that are not touched.
Now, whether these places still have gold in them (they could have mined it without anyone knowing) is a very different question. However, these aren't the only sites in America to have gotten this treatment.
If there was it would have been mined over a century ago.
Not necessarily. If you had tons of gold already, would you want someone to dilute that? Not at a low rate, but at a doubling or tripling in a year? If you had control over whether it was mined, you would make sure it wasn't.
However, there is tons of gold just waiting to be gotten without these particular caches.
