Electricity is the easiest way to get water up the well and up into the air and into your water tank. The taller the height, the more it becomes impossible to do by hand. This height is known as "head height"
There are some hand pumps, but their head height is usually only a few feet.
Then there is using a bucket and rope to raise water up.
So, in an off grid situation, you usually see an electric pump that fills a large reservoir.
The reservoir is to provide water for a long time.
The electric pump is usually run with a generator ever day or so to fill up the reservoir.
The links i gave are for a solar powered pump.
A 55 gallon drum is a very small reservoir.
