Unfortunately, science doesn't work that way.

The people need to believe it first, or it won't happen.

I know this is like complete absurd to everyone who has been exposed to modern materialistic science.

This is what happens to water crystals when thought is applied.
Imagine that your technology relied on a specific type of crystal being formed.
And you believed it was just "science". You do a thing, and a thing happens.
But, in actuality, it is more complex, you belief in it working makes the crystal form in the specific way, which makes the technology work. And we just deal with that every once in a while, you do not believe the same / feel the same, and the technology "glitches"

And really, all of our technology relies on crystals.
