This wasn't what any MSmockingbirdM is saying.
But what is it? Who's was it?

Best guess was this was an outdated "satellite" that the maneuvered to fly over the americas
Why else would they "pop" it over Myrtle Beach? Where there was enough people to have multiple people catching it on phones. And the ocean probably had more craft in the area then just about anywhere in Montana.

One idea is that they did it for salvage.
Find unmanned junk at sea, you can claim it.
The other is it was all for publicity...
