Something i have always wanted to know.
These kinds of maps always show you the way to get to the treasure
... but is that path really important? The X is the only important thing right?
Couldn't you just pull your boat (the path starts in the blue area) right up to that little inlet, then it is a hop, skip and jump to the X.

I bet there is something important i am missing.
