Ok, read all that.
First thing, the frontier of the internet is where all the geeks hang out (of course there is a more modern terms) and geeks don't really work on that whole put down, drama stuff. They would rather build. And the slowness (time to think to respond) of the internetz works well for their communication style.
STEEM was an awesome place. Despite that it was built as a scapegoat for Tether and Bitshares. A lot of people came and built it up, both programitically and socially. And there was many awesome people to talk with and respond to.
Then they sold the thing to Mr. Tron.
And, just like you said, a miracle happened. All the support got created, and then a fork happened.
I am glad we are here... but that nuclear bomb dropped by Ned (or was it Ted) really did hurt.
