"For the greater good" is always false.

The greatest good is done by each individual seeking their highest joy. (hedonistic pleasures are not that high, and so that response will just be ignored)

The universe is set up in such a way that every person is essential. If everyone followed their highest joy, we would see a lot of things just coming together. Each puzzle piece unique, and each puzzle piece occupying its own space.

When you forgo your highest joy for the "greater good", then you reduce the amount of joy in the world and increase the amount of suffering. The suffering you cause to yourself is the suffering you cause to all others. And it multiplies.
