it is not "vigilante justice" to defend yourself.

And, i have rarely seen the police defend people.
What i have seen, time and time again, is the police showing up to take a report about what happened, long after its all over.

What is even more common than the police defending people, is the police showing up and arresting the person that needed help, shooting the person that needed help, and generally making a bad situation worse.
