This is a really hard topic, because it really boils down to "what is the group afraid of".

Most leftists are afraid of starving, or being without food, water, sex...
And so, the govern-cement should provide these things, equally and fairly.
i.e. it should not be left up to the whims of some (out to get you) boss giving you a paycheck.

Most neo-cons are afraid of having what they have taken away.
And in such a bent, that making sure those people over the hill there do not come over here, in a pre-emptive manner as justifiable.

Freedom... We really have very little of it, and almost everyone i know is actually scared of too much freedom.
Those not are really insane people

Social norms are important. Its really hard to deal with a group of people without them.
But social norms are a restriction on freedom. And often, can appear arbitrary.

I see humanity working on working with allowing more and more freedom.
