Well, Detroit decided it was better to buy up all the patents for any car improvements to keep design and development costs low. (competition eats money in R&D)
Also, NASA decided they were going to keep the shape of the earth, and thus the apparent flaws in the "gravity is a result of mass" from the public.
Thus, although flying cars would be relatively easy to build... well, think of all the tire companies. If things were allowed to progress than today there wouldn't be a
GoodYear.
