It was a throw-away line that I blurted out the other day without a lot of thought but it kind of stuck with me and I came to appreciate the profound truth of the statement in summing up my attitude. Stackers like to stack different types of Coins, Bars and what-not and everybody has their own preferences but at the end of the day I ask you the question “What makes your stack valuable?”. Is it the metal content of your items, or what might be printed on them?
Coins and Bars in particular usually have a design of some sort. Maybe there's a monarchs head, a reference to a country and/or even a number which is supposed to represent a nominal value for the item in Fiat Currency. Yet history shows us that countries tend to come and go. So do monarchs, governments and fiat currencies themselves, so is it wise to trust that the words printed on our stacked items will hold true and represent value over the long run?
My answer is a firm NO. At the end of the day what’s important to me is the metal content of my stack. Gold and Silver have stood the test of time for centuries, if not millennia. Gold and Silver are elements on the Periodic Table and they will NEVER change. As elements they are timeless and no matter what governments or markets say, they will ALWAYS have value. That’s why I say that the Periodic Table doesn’t lie. It speaks an immutable truth about the essence of matter.
Put your faith wherever you might like, but for me personally I am resolute.
While I might appreciate the nice designs that appear on various Coins and Bars I don’t trust the words and numbers that are printed on them at all. When things go bad those words and numbers can easily turn out to be lies. So I stack accordingly.
