Where Art Thou SteemSilverGold : Community and Tag Analysis

It’s been a while since I was really involved with the stacking community on STEEM. Now that I’m here on HIVE I’m digging around to see what that old community looks like and what it’s up to. Did they make the journey over to HIVE en masse and is the community I knew even recognisable anymore? Would they recognise me after so long and so much change?

The old community used to rally around the tag #SteemSilverGold and with everything that’s happened, that tag seems kind of redundant now. I’ve seen a few other tags doing the rounds but the group now seems to be calling itself SilverGoldStackers – which is a fine name, but I was still confused about HOW the group is posting. One of the recent upgrades introduced a “Communities” feature and a new Silver Gold Stackers community has been created which identifies itself with the inconspicuous tag #hive-136819 However, when I went to view the content of that community it seemed quite sparse. So I thought the first thing I should do is have a look at how much these tags have been used. That meant shelling out for access to HiveSQL and refining some old queries.

The above chart shows 3 data series and dates back to January 1st, 2020 – before HIVE even existed. The green line represents the number of daily posts using the old #SteemSilverGold tag. As you can see it fell off a cliff around March 20 (the date of the HIVE fork) although it has not completely died. At around the same time the new tag #SilverGoldStackers started up and while it hasn’t reached the same level of usage as the old tag, it’s not far off and appears to be trending upward. The yellow line is the #hive-136819 tag associated with the community feature created for Silver Gold Stackers. As you can see, even though the community feature pre-dates the HIVE fork, the numbers are right down by comparison and that explains why the content I saw on the community page was so sparse. But the question is why?

Clearly the community members using the #SilverGoldStackers tag are not posting from within the Silver Gold Stackers community feature. So the next thing to do was look at what the main tag (category) was being used on those posts. The above pie chart is a breakdown of just the top 10. The LeoFinance community is clearly a dominant 1st place, more than twice the size of 2nd. I guess this makes sense as stacking is a finance related pursuit and I know that LeoFinance not only has developed a nice front end, but it has its own token to reward posters. I was a bit surprised to see Actifit community in 2nd as I see no real relationship to stacking but rather than take this post off topic, I’ll come back to that another time. 3rd place are the posts using #silvergoldstackers as the main tag and 4th is the Silver Gold Stackers community (using tag #hive-136819).

So it seems like the community has spoken. A large number of community members are posting from the LeoFinance community portal and using the #SilverGoldStackers tag to link their content. This makes sense, though when I go to leofinance.io I still see steemsilvergold in the left hand tag menu. We should probably get that fixed up if this is the way the community is going.
