Last month I wrote a big post about Fighting the Ministry of Truth in Australia which was about rallying local resistance to the Federal Government here that is attempting to introduce an Orwellian Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2023 to parliament. Not long ago this proposed piece of legislation suffered a major setback as it was withdrawn for an ”Overhaul” in the face of fairly strong pushback.
The Federal Government now plans to rewrite their proposed legislation and re-introduce it to parliament some time in 2024. While many would cite this development as a Victory against the Ministry of Truth, it’s not the end of the story – at least not yet. We did see something similar to this when there was a Cash Ban proposed by the OTHER major political party of Australia some years ago which met strong resistance. I wrote about Australias Cash Ban back in the STEEM days and after strong push back that Orwellian legislation was withdrawn. It then quietly died in the darkness so there is hope yet that something similar will happen here, but it’s not certain.
We will have to wait and see what the government comes back with. The Authoritarians from both major political parties here don’t really give up on their agenda, they just tend to pivot, change tact and come again a different way. However I do find it very encouraging to see my fellow Australians now consistently pushing back against this kind of draconian overreach. People are slowly starting to wake up to what is going on and the Freedom Movement here is getting more organized and better at rallying to fight these sorts of battles now. It’s positive but still no time for complacency.
