When I saw this topic, two movies came to my mind. Although I did a six-month internship program in a hospital, it was all in a confined area as I was a lab guy. As You know lab guys like me don’t get much time outside but the thing about hospitals is that you don’t need to be outside to know what is happening. For instance when we have emergencies back to back you end up seeing samples coming in and I mean different types of samples.
Ok, I’ll come back to this later. First, I will talk about the two movies. Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med. I saw Grey’s anatomy first, I think I was in my second year then. I enjoyed everything about this TV show. The drama and the way they talk about medical terms.
Some of my friends in medicine then used Grey anatomy as a way of relaxing especially when they were on holiday. They found it so relatable. I didn’t understand much of that then until I started my internship at a teaching hospital.
I got to see my own personal drama and also before I forget the stress of being on call. Chicago Med also intrigued me apart from teaching and showing the sacrifices these personnel makes every day to see that patients get treated and recover to the best of their ability.
Both Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med did a good job of showing what transpires in the OR (Operating Room). In the hospital, we all know the OR is the most secluded area as only authorized persons are allowed. In developed countries, however, as we see in Grey’s anatomy there is an observation area where students can stay and watch the operation. Also, we see some loved ones stay there as the series progress.
Since my country is what we will call developing the secrecy of the OR is still high and it is even difficult for students as my friends in medicine then told me they had to stand beside a patient in the OR and they were not just a few.
The near reality portrayed by both shows and the way the characters showed their medical prowess even if I knew it was acting still impressed me to the extent that sometimes I forget that it was all a movie.
I love the laboratory, I mean that is why I studied microbiology in the first place. But, apart from that, I love the calmness of the lab even when there is a sample rush it is just a bit of what is happening outside the confinement of the lab. In places like the A & E ward or the Delivery ward where the chaos sometimes is so much they end up requesting more hands.
Ok, let me digress a little I remember one time there was an accident with a tanker, and multiple road users got affected. We had to be called from the lab to collect samples at the emergency unit. I think it was my first time witnessing chaos at that level. How the nurses and doctors survived that day is still a miracle.
In conclusion, these movies not only show me the value of life, good health, and family. It also puts me in the seat of these medical officers who perform what I will term miracles day in and day out.
