Julia Navalnaya Reveals Her True Colors: Another Voice of Russism on the International Stage

During an IT conference in Portugal, Ukrainian activists attempted to disrupt the speech of Julia Navalnaya, the wife of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny. They activated an air raid siren and chanted "Stop Russia! Stop the war!" in protest against her controversial comments about the war in Ukraine.

This protest was a response to Navalnaya’s recent interview with the German publication Die Zeit in October, where she stated that Ukraine's counteroffensive in the Kursk region "has two sides." Navalnaya also refrained from openly supporting military aid to Ukraine, commenting ambiguously, "It's hard to say. Bombs also hit Russians." Her words sparked outrage not only among Ukrainians but also across Europe, where there is widespread support for Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.

Navalnaya's remarks illustrate that even opposition figures in Russia often struggle to let go of imperialist ideologies and display blatant indifference to the suffering of others. The virus of Russism, deeply rooted in Russian society, continues to erode empathy and the ability to comprehend the tragedies endured by others. It seems that even personal losses and tragedies cannot bring people like her to recognize the magnitude of the problem or stop justifying aggression. This underscores that the issue of Russism runs far deeper and cannot be resolved by changing individuals alone, as long as this toxic worldview remains acceptable to many Russians.
