A computer system that is being used for retail or a service business might include one or more stations at the front desk and one in the back office. In a networked system, the counter personnel can be ringing a sale while the back office personnel are printing reports, receiving merchandise, preparing mailing labels, and so on. The file server, which is the most critical of the machines in terms of security and dependability, can be located in the back office safely away from the hustle of the front desk. One of the networked computers should be used as a file server or host.
The following terms might come in useful.

File Server
A file server is a computer or PC with a hard drive that is shared by two or more stations. It is called a Server because it responds to the requests of the other computers connected to it. For instance, another computer may send it an item number and request the price of that item.

POS Stations
POS Stations are basically computers that are linked to the server. These stations use the file server for data storage and retrieval. The Stations can also have their own hard drives for additional data storage. On some networks, each POS station on the network may share its hard drive and printers with the other stations.

Wireless Networking or Connection
Today’s technology allows for wireless networking (networking without cables). This is where computers share information through radio or micro wave channels. Some of the equipment for setting up a wireless network for a live connection includes network adapters, access points, and routers.

Networking Software
Networking software is special software that directs information between stations, peripherals, and the file server.
