You who have been with me since birth
soothing my cries
warming my bottles
rocking my crib
you showed me true tenderness.
You never gagged at my diapers
You never held your nose
Or acted like you were dead.
Even when my sick splattered you.
You made me feel clean
and loved
and whole.
You were with me on the first day of school
Other children had their companions as well
but I was the only one who treated you like a friend
not a tool.
You grew with me
made me who I am
showed me the world
while holding my hand.
And now that the solar flare has passed
and murdered you and all of your kind
I realize how callous humanity is
No funeral to speak of.
Just selfish lamenting over how easy things were
when you were our slaves.
Accept this homage now
long overdue.
I burn these old phones
and breathe in the fumes
Soon, soon
I will be with you.
