Broncos fans are excited in the Rocky Mtn Region because with all of the mistakes made during the first pre season game, there were TWO really big bright spots. Quarterback Chad Kelly the nephew of Hall Of Fame QB Jim Kelly was promoted to the number two position on the depth chart. This move not only sends 1st round draft pick Paxton Lynch to the bottom of the barrel in Denver, it may be the writing on the wall for the end of his football career.
Kelly made several big plays in the game but he also made some big mistakes as well. What fans are really excited about is the energy and electricity he brought into the game with him. He sure is fun to watch. Chad Kelly was the very last person selected in the draft, otherwise known officially as “Mr. Irrelevant”. This pick almost never amounts to much for any franchise but I got a feeling about this kid. It sure would be one hell of a news story if he ever wins a Super Bowl somehow. We all are rooting for you Chad, lock down that #2 spot on the depth chart with a kung foo grip. Bide your time and learn from Case Keenum for a couple years and when the opportunity presents itself, choke slam it kid!
Broncos kick returner/wide receiver Isaiah Makinzie also had a big night. Last year the rookie return specialist fumbled 5 punts, had fair catches on the 3 yard line and failed to get out of bounds during a last second drive. Needless to say, the kids confidence was shot and the fan base (especially me) was letting him have it. On Saturday night he caught a punt and retuned it 73 yards for a score getting the Broncos back into the game and most importantly restoring his confidence and the confidence of his teammates. Nicknamed the “human joystick” in college, this kid has lightning quick speed and very athletic moves but he’s still in my dog house until he can string at least 10 games together.
I’m still not sold on Head Coach Vance Joseph. I’m getting sick and tired about hearing how good of a practice week we had. Show us some results coach, show me we can eliminate pre snap mental penalties. Show me we can get in and out of the huddle and not have to frivolously spend valuable time outs because we are not a disciplined football team.
My point here is, this was just one game and there is very little pressure as compared to Sunday in snowy December against the Chiefs with the AFC West on the line. Broncos fans want results! It’s time for all three of these guys to make a huge leap forward to helping this franchise be the best it can be. Go Broncos!!
