Recently, a lot of people have come to me and asked my feedback about their career. I am not a career expert or coach by any means. However, almost a year ago today, I made the decision to leave corporate America, not knowing what my future would hold.
I am surrounded by friends and business colleagues wanting to make a career change but are so afraid to do so. Whether it be lack of confidence or limited financial resources, they feel they are stuck and cannot make the jump. They want advice on how to make the change to doing their own thing just as I did.
When asked for career advice, I always ask the simple question, does your current job make you happy? So cliché, I know. But so often, we are so afraid of change, we do what is comfortable regardless of how it makes us feel. It's natural to take the less risky, easier path.
I always ask the question above for one main reason, the power of authenticity. Being real and truly loving your job has so many advantages. For one, you wake up every day with a purpose. You are happy to go fulfill that purpose. And as a result, you spread good energy into the world. With passion comes drive, you will feel more driven and inspired each day. Lastly, good energy and believing in your brand will make others believe in your brand too. When you love what you do and you believe in what you do, more people are going to have faith in the services that you provide. Passion, drive, and confidence, how could you not succeed?
Now I am not saying that you should run out and quit your job. Be smart about it. With starting your own business or making a career change, there will be some risks and it won't always be easy. But wouldn't it be better to be happy with a few challenges than miserable with an easy routine? I think so but the choice is yours. Regardless of what choice you make, always remember to have faith in what you do and know that you can create anything you desire if you just put your mind to it.
