We have heard the phrase before. "Let go and let God." I cannot tell you how many times I have heard it.
My whole life, I have been about control. From my relationships, to my career, to my diet. I had to control every aspect of my life. I enjoyed routine, discipline. Every second of my life was scheduled. I made jokes, that to use the restroom, I had to schedule time. I was running a rat race that I was not winning.
When I chose to leave my career in corporate America and figure out a different path, I was completely overwhelmed. Although it was my choice, I had so much time on my hands. I could workout when I wanted and I could sleep later than usual. To be honest, I had forgotten what it felt like to have a solid night's sleep. While it was another person's dream, I was COMPLETELY FREAKING OUT INTERNALLY.
As time went on and my life was more relaxed, my nerves started to ease. I started to appreciate my alone time. My time was my own and I started to really appreciate the little things. Time with friends became much more meaningful. I found beauty in taking walks outside, hearing laughter or enjoying the moments alone in the morning drinking an extra cup of coffee. I had a clear mind and was able to think logically. I didn’t freak out if an appointment was running late or things took longer than usual.
I begin to realize that overtime, during my alone time, I had trained my mind to “let go and let God." Whenever things stirred up, instead of stressing, I decided to give up control and let things flow naturally.
My lifestyle change has impacted me dramatically. And while I did always get frustrated when my mindset was criticized for constantly needing control, now that I am an outsider looking in, my lifestyle was unrealistic and exhausting.
There is a famous quote from an unknown author that reads:
“Accept what is,
Let go of what was,
And have faith in what will be."
I couldn’t agree more. When you let life flow, let go of the past and have faith in the future, life flows much better than expected. So like most people around me, I am going to say the common phrase that we have all heard before, when it comes to life "let go and let God."
