accordding to the statistics , of the world's existing writing systems,there are more than 1,000 different kinds of written languages. at the beginning the function of written language was to record events and what people did and said.therefore,the creation of written systems was differed from each other.some of the written language focused on the relation ship between spelling and pronunciation; some of them related the writing form more closely to the meaning.In general,there are three types of written systems;(1) phonetic,as in the English alphabet;(2) syllabic,as in japanese syllabic scripts--kana: and (3) logographic, as in chinese characters.

Why difficult?

it is one of the oldest languages in the world . chinese writting system was created more than 3,500 years ago. in others language have some limited words or characters, but chinese language have a history. there is don't have limited words or characters. chinese language have one of the biggest words list. and it's have diffirent writting system. no one can remember all characters even a chinese person can not remember. every character have many writting strokes , now i showing you a characters , it's have more than 60 stroke

how many characters are there in the chinese writting language?

The largest dictionary contains more than 100,000 characters. Although this many seem a great number of characters, many of those characters are seldom used. the frequently used characters are those that cover 99% of characters appearing in books and newspapers, a total of arounds 5,000, with only 3,000 or so used every day life. Among those 3,000 characters , 950 have the highest frequency of appearance, covering 90% of those printed in books and newspapers.

Therefore , it is possible for a foreigner to be able to read in chinese if he or she knows about 1,000 of the most frequently used characters.
