I recently finished a short novel named Cleaning the Gold by Lee Child and Karen Slaughter.
This short story combined two great characters, Jack Reacher and Will Trent, so it was a must read for me. Add in gold bars and I am intrigued. The story was fairly intricate for not being a full novel. Trent is featured more, though also features classic Jack Reacher power/domination/intelligence.
The story follows the two going undercover at Fort Knox for the one in ten year of cleaning the gold bars in the vault. Is some of the gold missing? If so, who did it? The two work independently, then together to solve the mystery. The story ends quickly and was slightly anti-climactic.
Perhaps my hopes on this one were too high, but it was a little bit of a letdown. I would say that it is still worth it if you are a big Reacher or Trent fan, but its not a must read if you have limited time to do pleasure reading.
I give this one a 3.5 out of 5.
