Twin Peaks returns tonight and I'm psyched about it. To get in the mood I thought I'd show off a book cover concept I made for a biography of the white picket fence surrealist.
In Lynch's movies a person often finds themselves barefoot and mostly (or completely) naked wandering around in a daze. It is also common for characters to come across severed ears and the like just sitting on the ground. So for this cover I took off my shoes, wandered around, and used my own hair to create the typeface for "Dreamy". It wasn't easy forming my curly locks into recognizable letters, but I think the finished product is well worth it.
I took the title for this fictional biography from a paragraph I found very interesting in Lynch on Lynch.
"I wouldn't know what to do with [colour]. Colour to me is too real. It's limiting. It doesn't allow too much of a dream. The more you throw black into a colour, the more dreamy it gets… Black has depth. It's like a little egress; you can go into it, and because it keeps on continuing to be dark, the mind kicks in, and a lot of things that are going on in there become manifest. And you start seeing what you're afraid of. You start seeing what you love, and it becomes like a dream."

The first time I saw Twin Peaks it was an all night showing at a small arthouse theater in Cambridge, MA. We showed up at 10pm on a clear cold November night to watch Fire Walk With Me and the entire first season while drinking coffee and eating pie. We emerged from the theater almost twelve hours later to a sunny day and Harvard Square covered in a fresh layer snow. It was quite a surreal change to go along with such an intense night of viewing. The only thing that would have made that night more magical was if Lynch had been there with us (like when I saw the Inland Empire premiere at the very same Brattle Theater).
