(For those of you who have seen and/or commented on my previous post(s) of my lyrics for Urban Grey, I hope you will find the backstory interesting.)
In case you were wondering, despite coming from a musical family, I do not play any musical instruments. I do, however, spend a lot of time with musicians and number several of them among my closest friends. Dobata Records (or Dobromir Ganchev) is chief among them. Dobata -- a huge, scary-looking, full-body-tattooed sort of lovable guy -- is the lead vocalist for a metal band here in Sofia called Urban Grey. Several years ago, we began collaborating on lyrics for his songs.
This is how it works: the guys in the group rehearse, come up with a working version of, and record a demo of a song. In many cases, the song has already been performed in concert several times, and thus has some idea or unedited lyrics. If the lyrics carry meaning and tell me a story (and are not full of errors or cliches), I basically just check the transitions and the overall vision of the song, and make few changes. In other cases, though, Dobata and I come up with the lyrics ourselves, being sure to keep the length of the lines and the meter singable :) I normally write using internal or end rhyme, but this song is (almost) a total exception to the rule, as it has very little rhyme, and even that is debatable.
My motivation behind writing these lyrics -- which came rapidly and without much effort, this time -- is that I despise hypocrisy, and the Antifa Bowel-Movement is the total and complete incarnation of hypocrisy. To any person well-versed in satire, a quick reading of the lyrics should suffice to catch the irony of the whole thing. For others, perhaps an explicit explanation is required.
When anyone cries "Tolerance" and steals your hat because it has a political slogan on it, that person is not practicing tolerance. Nor if that person beats you, breaks your camera, or otherwise violently attacks your person or your property. Peaceful protest is fine and should be defended -- even if the protestors' point of view differs diametrically with your own -- and that goes for both sides. So, "I wrote this little ditty" to express my shock and outrage against the violence being committed -- mainly by those who preach the exact opposite.
So, here it is, once again, in all its glory (D is for Dobata and B is for Bebo, the other vocal):
Antifa Love
B) Hate can’t be allowed to prosper in the system —
It must be banned; it must be ostracized!
D) Bigots, racists, vile misogynists,
Sexists, ageists, cis-gender homophobes,
Ablists, rapists, and genocidal Nazis,
Red necks, white men —
You won’t be tolerated
B) Our love, righteous anger, will replace this system —
Your hate be damned in our society!
D) The fists of welcome, the arms of outcry,
The scourge of fascists, we preach the violence
Of love (x2)
D) We protest peacefully
Attacking no one
But those we disagree with
Because their voices hurt
Our over-sensitivity
So when we beat them
We spread the love
Promoting peace
And racial harmony
D) We are antifa, won’t stop at outcry,
Just like the fascists, we use the violence
Of love
B) Love
D) Love to hate, love to hate you
B) Violence
D) Of love
B) We are antifa
D) Love to hate, love to hate
B) Embrace antifa
