Thunderbolt 3 Dual HDMI2.0 dock
However, since most of the things I do with it are web surfing, 2D work, video playback, and so on, I thought that using eGPU would be quite a waste (cost + power + space), so I looked for a less expensive substitute and found a mini dock using Thunderbolt 3 .
It is divided into DP type and HDMI type according to screen output type, and there are various products, but when we look at the same shape and terminal configuration, we decided that all the oem was made in the same place.
It is also sold by Amazon, and Shinhan Card promotions are applied to the direct delivery. WD sponsorship also allows you to use one of the $ 20 gift cards.
The packaging is really simple, but there are no manuals in the small plain boxes and the products are just hanging.
I also bought a USB3.0 7 + 3 port hub and a USB3.0 extension cable that I purchased in the same time period.
The terminal configuration is as above.
Support Thunderbolt 3 input with HDMI2.0 output x2, USB3.0, USB2.0, Gigabit Rj45 port in non-power source.
When connected to Thunderbolt 3 terminal, it is recognized immediately and 4k, 60Hz screen output is possible with HDMI2.0 terminal at the same time.
It was not really important because the screen output was the key, but I tried once to verify that the other ports worked well.
I compared it with other USB cards I had for performance comparison of RJ45 port.
I am using Mac AXIS AX88179 chipset and ipTime's Realtek RTL8153 chipset USB 3.0 adapter.
I am using a 500MBps internet and I am almost getting the maximum speed from the gamemac.
ipTime The speed is similar in the LAN card.
The Thunderbolt Mini Dock is also very fast.
I measured the speed while performing dual output with HDMI2.0, but there is no speed decrease.
I also measured the speed of the USB terminal and compared the transfer speed of the USB memory.
Cheap USB memory does not come out much speed, but it is the speed when connected directly to the USB3.0 terminal of the notebook.
This is the speed when connecting to the USB 3.0 port of Thunderbolt Mini Dock, and there is almost no difference from when connected directly.
Finally, when connected to the mini dock's USB 2.0 port, the USB version is definitely low and there is a slowdown.
Thunderbolt 3 has a bandwidth of up to 40Gbps, but the sum of 42.48 Gbps (= 18 × 2 + 1 + 2) is used because the HDMI2.0 terminal uses 18Gbps, RJ45 uses 1Gbps, USB3.0 uses 5GBps, and USB2.0 uses 0.48Gbps. 5 + 0.48), but the 4k, 60Hz screen transmission does not use 18Gbps, but only 15Gbps is maintained. Therefore, it seems that the bandwidth of HDMI2.0 terminal is made slightly lower.
For reference, dual DP type mini dock is due to the high bandwidth of DP, one of USB2.0 terminals is missing.
The following is a summary.
Advantages
Disadvantages
It takes about 5 ~ 20 seconds for USB memory to be recognized after mounting it through Thunderbolt.
It seems to be less frustrating to use USB devices such as keyboards and mice (receivers) for everyday use.
I am not sure if anyone who uses this product in Korea can use it, but when I use it directly, it seems to be a very useful product when I need a multi monitor output without the help of an external graphics card in a system having a Thunderbolt 3 port.
