There are a no shortage of break up songs out there. But divorce songs are still not all that common. Especially not in 1973 when this album came out. Marvin Gaye was quite vocal about his divorce. It clearly impacted him, and he sung about it in this song. He delivers this song in a style that only Marvin Gaye can.
