- Lassa is named after the area in Afica where first identified in 1969
- It causes no symptoms in many victims
- 1% of people infected die
- About 25% suffer hearing loss, that partially returns
- It is spread due to infected rat urine & feceas
- It presents in a similar way to Ebola
- No vaccines are available
Ebola on the other hand
- Has a high risk of death 25-90%
- it is spread from human to human
- Fruit bats are the main carriers
- Containment is critical to stop spread.
So what we have are 2 diseases, that initially present the same way, but with massive differences in outcomes.
