After the first hack that transfered user account into another, in a hack that continued after the police were notified, they have struck again. Last time the hack and the movement of funds continued while the police watched on.
This time funds have been moved to the same account, which is now looking rather like a very fat wallet.
The only way to stop this seems to be the obvious, shut down cryptopia.
In the alternate all user need to be advised to not deposit to their accounts, and take out their current funds, while they can, which in effect is the same thing as shutting down cryptopia.
Some interesting questions arise from this on going saga.
Like what are the police suppose to do?
Should they have the power to force an exchange to shut down?
Other than stopping all transfers out of an exchange, how can this sort of hack be controlled or eliminated.
It would seem that someone has access to private keys possibly by the thousands, or they have a way to bypass keys.
The only place that would possibly keep a record of all the keys used on an exchange, is the exchange itself.
Perhaps the lesson to be learned is that old one of not keeping funds on an exchange.
With a little luck the funds will be returned at some point, it has happened before, and the very clever/knowledgeble hackers will reveal the methods/techniques used, thereby ensuring all exchanges can build in protections.
Perhaps they can be compensated for their security skills in some way.
This would be the best outcome for the crypto world as a whole. Bad press spreads like wildfire.
Finding them & taking legal action is somewhat of a dead end road, based on the bad press for the whole industry, and the simple fact that if one person knows how to do this, then many others probably do also.
So a reward for "security skills", offered by the industry for the good of the whole industry seems like the best course.
