I know I have said this before, but I love going do to the Columbus, OH area to visit my inlaws. The four hour drive really isn't that bad and sure the family time is great, but what I really love is the food!
The food is so fantastic one could aruge that Columbus is the culinary epicenter of the Midwest. Not only is a it a test market for many fast food restaurants (meaning you see items there before you see them in locations across the country), they also have many new locally owned chains opening up.
With five locations in central Ohio, The Rail is one such local chain. After a long day watching my nieces play softball, we needed some sustenance. It was soon decided that we would visit The Rail for dinner.
I didn't get a ton of great photos from the outside. The location we visited has a very modern feel. Lots of brick and windows, it basically just looks like a big box from the outside. There is a large sunroom area with access to an outdoor patio that might have been inviting had we not been in the middle of a heat wave. The sunroom/patio area is actually where the majority of the seating is.
They have a pretty cool bar area stocked full of beers and spirits brewed or distilled in the state of Ohio. We all (except the kids) decided to try something and as you will see at the end of this post, it had a significant impact on our bill.
There were eight of us during this visit so we all sat at a long high top table in the bar area. I usually hate high top tables because there is typically nothing to put your feet on unless you curl them back to your own chair. That was not the case here, the table had a foot bar underneath it and the seating was quite comfortable.
Sadly, I didn't get any pictures of the drinks, my family is pretty understanding about me taking pictures for my posts, but I don't like to push my luck.
The menu is actually pretty short. The big draw for the rail is their burgers. Using all locally sourced beef, pork, and poultry, they give you a huge number of options for your burgers.
If you don't pick one of the specialty burgers, you can just get a standard burger with your choice of six protiens: 100% beef, veggie burger, grilled chicken breast, breaded chicken breast, chicken burger, or the mojo burger (beef and andouille blend). My mouth was watering just viewing the posibilities.
I got the 7th Heaven Burger which was a beef patty with Ohio thick cut bacon, truffle butter, and a red onion jam. I had them cook it medium well, but it actually was a bit more done than I would have liked. I should have asked for them to cook it medium. The flavors were fantastic though.
I had a local bourbon on the rocks called Watershed to accompany mine and it was very smooth and enjoyable.
I can't give as much commentary on the rest of the food other than to say they enjoyed it. I do have pictures though!
My brother in law got the Bonfire Burger and substitued the loaded fries for the shoestring fries. The buger has pepper jack cheese, a house made jalapeno relish, sriracha sauce, and roasted habanero sauce on the side.
His wife got the Railvore burger with sweet potato fries substituted. The burger had onion, mushrooms, bacon compote, provolone cheese, and a truffle aioli.
@mrsbozz got the perfectly naked chicken burger with lettuce, red onion, tomato, and two other things that I am not sure of. I would guess pickles was one of them.
My Father in law got the Mojo burger which has a custom blended patty of beef and andouille sausage, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato, and jalapeno coleslaw
Everyone else got a basic burger that I didn't get any pictures of. I forgot to mention we also got an order of deep fried pickles as an appetizer.
If you look at the top left corner of the menu or better yet online, The Rail has some seasonal specialties that I was almost tempted to try out. If I make it back there, I will probably go that route next time.
The food was fantastic and the flavor profiles were immense. For a group our size, it was delivered in a very timely manner and we were actually surprised when it was suddenly being delivered to our table.
At $156 before tip, it wasn't a cheap meal by any means. We initially fought him over it, but @mrsbozz's dad graciously handled the bill. It's probably not a place I would spend the evening drinking at (solely because of the prices), but as a once every other month stop for a great burger, the price is well worth it.
If you are ever in the Central Ohio area and you are looking for a great locally source burger be it chicken, pork, or beef, you should definitely check out The Rail.
