Oh yeah, Valley of Fire isn't exactly close to the city. I remember making the drive last time we were there and I can see how it would be hectic if you had a tight schedule to keep. The scenery is totally worth it though! I'm glad you got to see the eclipse. It was only partial here, but it was still pretty cool.
