Ouch, that is rough. I totally understand your reasoning for not wanting to pay off those debts. My wife and I took several years of us working together to finally get her student loans taken care of. If she hadn't consolidated them we could have gotten forgiveness on them through one of the legacy programs, but as soon as she consolidated them all that went out the window. It's all such a racket!
