I guess I would argue then if you just want to secure the blockchain and not be involved in the direction of it, then they shouldn't be voting on proposals. At the very least they vote on the return proposal and that is it. Then everything else has to rise to the level based on community consensus of being valuable. Things have changed recently and it's not quite as bad as it used to be, so it doesn't bug me quite as much as it used to.
