I was scrolling through one of my news feeds the other day and I came across this story from the Associated Press. The TL:DR version is this father and son treasure hunting team called Finders Keepers did some research and got a line on some confederate gold from the civil war era.
Since it was on state owned land, the FBI had to get a court order which led to a string of emails that are only now becoming available. Basically the FBI dug up the whole area and when they were finished told the father and son, "nope, we didn't find anything".
The FBI was supposed to be there for protection, but instead they supposedly absconded with the who lot of gold.
They confined the Finders Keepers crew to their cars and dug through the night when excavation was supposed to be paused. Residents recount seeing a convoy of FBI vehicles including armored cars leaving the area.
Three years later the duo is still trying to draw attention to what happened by having news conferences and requesting the emails that went back and forth.
My point is, this got me thinking about crypto currency and I started to wonder just how much the US government actually holds that they might have "collected" over the years from various places. Let's not even guess at what they have invested, and I know at times they have public auctions where they sell some of these assets.
What would your guess be? Let's take the whole government out of it and just consider the FBI alone. We would be foolish not to think that the CIA doesn't have a decent stash of the stuff that they use to pay off all sorts of clandestine sources.
Anyone feel like doing a quick Google dig to see if there is a figure out there for FBI confiscated cryptocurrency?
That's all I've got. I just found this interesting and thought provoking so I figured I would share it. Treasure has always fascinated me. Maybe that is why I am so into crypto these days!
