This is going to be a bit quicker post than usual. The fact is, I am absolutely swamped right now. All staff reported back to work yesterday, so this week is a bit of a frenzy getting ready for the first day of school next week. As much as I would like to just relax at my desk and spend the day on HIVE. I have to get out and get my butt moving.
Despite all of that, it is Tuesday, so I wanted to make sure I got my #threetunetuesday post out sponsored by @ablaze. We are jumping into the "S's" this week which means our first stop is South Carolina. I've actually been to South Carolina, though it was a long long time ago. I remember visiting Myrtle Beach briefly, and the the town of Charleston where there was an old zoo that you could drive through called Charles Towne Landing.
I also remember visiting a few forts during our time down there. I think one was For Sumter and the other was Fort Moultry. I have photos in an album somewhere and I briefly thought of digging them out last night, but I was just too tired.
I thought South Carolina was going to be an easy one this week, but then I found myself struggling to find anything I was really happy with. Then of course, things just kind of fell into place. You shouldn't be surprised to find that most of the songs I am going to share this week are country. We are talking "down south" after all.
It's only right that I should start things off with the inspiration for the title of this post and someone who has kind of become synonymous with South Carolina Darius Rucker. In fact, there are several songs of his I could have used that either reference South Carolina directly or have a veiled reference to the state. It was just a really easy leap. As much as I love Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius has really come into his own with this country music thing and while others might argue he doesn't deserve to be there, I think he has more than proven himself.
This is a song that I don't know as though I have ever heard before. Like most people, my experience with Bonnie Tyler is limited to her bigger hits (all two of them?). However, given her recent passing, I felt it might be good to include this song. It goes without saying that I am definitely going to be taking a deeper dive into Tyler the rest of this week. The reference to South Carolina comes about halfway through the song and it speaks to the warm southern comfort charm that South Carolina has.
Okay, so I lied, I only used one country song this week for this post. Like I said, I am a bit all over the place. As soon as I saw there was an Elvis Costello song that had South Carolina in it, I knew I had to fit that in somewhere. I really dig Costello. He was never on my radar much growing up, but I have really come to love his work through the years. Most specifically, the song "She". That tune just guts me, but the rest of his work is really good too. Check it out and let me know what you think!
