It's a pretty big weekend for sports with many conference games taking place in the world of college football. In addition to that, my nieces university softball teams kicks off their fall games with a home game against James Madison University. Finally, the MLB season comes to a close on Sunday as I mentioned earlier in the week. There are still a few slots left in the playoffs, so you better believe teams will be fighting hard to snag those.
In the American League we have Texas, Baltimore, and Houston fighting it out for the last wild card slot. Toronto is still viable too, but probably a very long shot. In the National League, it looks like it's between Arizona and Philadelphia to clinch that last wild card slot.
As I said though, college football kicks off tonight as we start to move out of the cupcake games and move onto conference play. Tonight we have Northwestern against number 5 Indiana. This should be an easy win for the Hoosiers, but their early game struggles last week might carry over into this week. If that happens it could be an interesting game for them.
On Saturday, if I had to queue in on just a few games to keep an eye on, I'd definitely pick number 1 Texas versus number 14 Tennessee. This could end up being an all Texas show, but given their struggles against Ohio State early in that game and the fact they are playing in Knoxville, it could be a lot more interesting.
Number 4 Mississippi vs number 21 Florida is another one of those games where it will probably be the number 4 team winning, but the fact that Florida is playing at home gives them a bit of an advantage. It looks like Vegas is actually giving Florida the benefit of the doubt on this one. Might be worth checking out!
Number 17 Iowa vs number 18 Michigan will be the most anticipated game in the Big Ten if I had to guess. Personally, I hope Michigan takes the loss at home, but it seems they also have a slight advantage according to Vegas, and we all know by now how much Vegas loves Michigan to win. Even when they don't!
In the late games, you might want to keep your eye on number 23 Texas A&M vs. number 10 LSU. With home field advantage, this could be a easy win for the Tigers, but I wouldn't ever underestimate a football team from Texas (unless it's the Cowboys).
Probably the second biggest matchup in the Big Ten this weekend is number 20 Oregon vs. number 12 USC. Vegas is actually giving Oregon the 3 point benefit in this game even though it is a road game for them. Given that info alone, this might be one worth tuning into. At the very least, flip back and forth between this and the LSU/A&M game.
Finally, if you have multiview from YouTube TV or some other service, you might also want to checkout number 19 Missouri taking on number 24 Mississippi State. This is another case where the lower ranked team might have the advantage according to the speculators. Along with home field advantage, I wouldn't be surprised if Mississippi State takes the win.
As for me, I'll be watching Michigan State host Nebraska in what could be a very good unranked game. Nebraska definitely has the edge given their momentum and the new coaching staff at MSU, but never count the Spartans out. They just might surprise you!
