How It Begins

Sometimes it’s a sudden idea that comes seemingly from nowhere. Sometimes it’s a connection that’s made under fortuitous circumstances. Sometimes, as is the case with this portrait of Karl Marx, it comes in the form of a request, but more often than not, it comes from just beginning. Just attempting. To do something. Anything.

Where It Goes

I’ve tried a lot methods for producing art, and especially portraits, over the past two years, and every time I start a new project, I never know where it’s going to take me. Along the way I’ve found stations, lean-tos, if you will, standing on the side of the trail. They are destinations (finished results) that I know I can get to, that I know I can stop at, but with every new project I start, the place that it ultimately leads to is, from the beginning, a mystery. And that is what keeps me interested in the creative life.

How about you? What keeps your wheels turning?
