April, a time for new beginnings in Japan.

This past week, as I began adjusting to the changes in my work placements, my morning routine and my commuting routes, I found myself swimming through a number of fresh and stale emotions.

Change, after ten years of similar changes, in a lot of ways, feels like no change at all.

I think this week’s poems really reflect this strange mixture of feelings. Amidst the boredom and redundancy, a strong longing for something different and an occasional surprise

in my heart
an invitation to
the road not taken

freshly-cut flowers
in a damp shady foyer
what a warm welcome

sorry we can’t help you
here’s a survey

in these old bones
a young man is wanting to
get up and dance

(5)

awoken
by the sound of a horn
green light

(6)

head out the window
tongue dangling in the wind
oh, to be a dog

sitting quietly
the students learn to ignore
the call of the wild
