Huashi - A Grave Experience / Grabesstille

On the same outing when I found Huaxi's Great Wall, & on the same hill range I also came across a very interesting graveyard. Well, graveyard, hillsides covered with tombs, not sure whether that was an official cemetery.	Auf demselben Spaziergang, auf dem ich Huaxis Große Mauer fand, stieß ich auf der gleichen Hügelkette auch auf einen interessanten Friedhof. Naja, Friedhof, mit Grüften bedeckte Hügel. Weiß nicht, ob es ein offizieller Friedhof war.

On my way there I had to be careful not to step on some caterpillars, though. Streets were partially covered in these little guys:	Auf dem Weg dorthin mußte ich auf meine Schritte achten, da die Straßen teilweise von diesen Raupen bedeckt waren:

Not sure, but this could be a cotton leafworm (Spodoptera litura). That probably rules the nice butterfly out as parent:	Könnte eine Asiatische Seidenglanzeule sein. Was wohl bedeutet, daß dieser Schmetterling nicht elterlich verantwortlich war:

Loads of interesting vehicles in Huashi. Found another mechanical mule, this one of the shorter variety:	Unmengen interessanter Fahrzeuge in Huashi. Sah wieder einen dieser mechanischen Mulis, allerdings von der kurzen Sorte:

At the foot of the hill, I was greeted by some late flowers:	Am Fuße des Hügels wurde ich von einigen Spätblühern begrüßt:

Finally, I was climbing up the hillside & it didn't take long to find the first grave:	Schließlich ging es dann doch den Hügel hoch. & schnell stieß ich auf das erste Grab:

A style quite different from most of what I had seen in Canton & Yunnan before. If I remember correctly, the tombs in Canton were often in the hillside, with a kind of courtyard in front of them. In Huashi, the courtyard surrounded the grave. &, at least at this site, there were no real tombs, but actual graves.	Vom Stil her sehr unterschiedlich zu dem, was ich aus Kanton & Yunnan kannte. Soweit ich mich entsinne, waren die Grüfte in Kanton oft in den Hügel eingelassen, mit einer Art Vorhof. In Huashi umgab der Hof das Grab. & es gab, zumindest auf diesen Hügeln, keine echten Grüfte, sondern Gräber.

The above is particularly interesting because it's almost a tomb. The grave hill is partially encased in what looks like concrete. (Most of what looked like concrete there wasn't.) Also remarkable is that the courtyard itself seems to have been kept clean. Most of the graves looked more like that:	Das obige ist besonders interessant, weil es fast eine Gruft ist. Das Grab ist teilweise von Beton umschlossen. Sah jedenfalls wie Beton aus, war dort aber oft keiner. Auch bemerkenswert ist der relativ saubere Hof. Die meisten Gräber sahen eher so aus:

Totally overgrown, not much of a courtyard, so probably the grave of a poorer soul. Noteworthy is the stuff on top of the grave hill. More about that later.	Total überwachsen. Auch ohne Hof, also vermutlich von einer ärmeren Seele. Man beachte das Zeug auf der Spitze des Grabhügels. Mehr dazu später.

Even most of the more elaborate grave constructions with courtyards were overgrown. Usually you have a few graves like that, but most of them are maintained in some way & you find offerings in front of them. I wonder whether the lack of maintenance is related to Huaxi building a theme park beside the cemetery.	Auch die meisten der luxuriöser konstruierten Gräber waren überwachsen. Üblicherweise findet man einige solcher Gräber, während die meisten mehr oder weniger in Ordnung gehalten & mit Opfergaben versehen werden. Frage mich, ob das Fehlen derselben darauf zurückzuführen ist, daß Huaxi dort einen Freizeitpark gebaut hatte.

Above you can see 2 more examples of the grave hill toppings. It looks like they put stacked paper on top of the grave, & then on top of the paper a piece of earth. I asked some Chinese friends, but they don't know what this is, either. Best suggestion is that it is related to joss paper, but that's usually burnt, not stacked.	Oben sieht man 2 Beispiele für Grabhügelgarnierung. Sieht aus, als hätten sie Papierstapel auf das Grab gelegt & dann noch ein Stück Erde auf das Papier. Habe mich bei chinesischen Freunden erkundigt; die kennen das aber auch nicht. Könnte mit Höllengeld zu tun haben, aber das wird normalerweise verbrannt, nicht auf's Grab gelegt.

Here is an example of a grave hill without topping. Probably another poor man's grave, considering there is nothing but a tombstone.	Hier ein Beispiel für einen Grabhügel ohne Garnierung. Wohl wieder ein Armeleutegrab, da es nur einen Grabstein hat.

This one strangely has at least 2 layers of paper & earth on top.	Dieses hat seltsamerweise 2 Lagen Papier & Erde obendrauf.

& here we have what looks like a broken bowl put on top of the grave hill. It's probably not a bowl, but something made from stone or concrete, but hard to make out.	& hier scheint man eine zerbrochene Schüssel auf das Grab gelegt zu haben. Wahrscheinlich keine Schüssel, sondern etwas aus Stein oder Beton, ist aber schwer zu sagen, was.

An unfinished courtyard. The grey plaster to make it look like concrete is largely missing.	Ein unvollendeter Hof. Der graue Putz, der nach Beton aussieht, fehlt größtenteils.

Here you can see the make-up of these courtyards a bit better, similar to Huaxi's Great Wall, they were made from bricks & then covered with grey plaster. & in the background you see that 'Great Wall' looming. This was probably the spot where I first noticed it.	Hier sieht man die Bauweise dieser Höfe etwas besser. Ähnlich wie Huaxis Große Mauer bestehen sie aus grau verputzten Ziegelsteinen. Im Hintergrund sieht man die 'Große Mauer'. War vermutlich die Stelle, an der sie mir zuerst auffiel.

But there was more than enough about that 'Great Wall' in my last post. I followed it for a while until I came to another (?) graveyard on the other side of the hill:	Aber über die 'Große Mauer' gab es genug in meinem letzten Beitrag. Folgte ihrem Verlauf eine Weile, bis ich auf der anderen Seite des Hügels weitere Gräber fand:

Above is another poor-man's grave, no courtyard, but with the toppings. The sticks with white paper are actually fairly common on Chinese graveyards (white being the colour of morning), on this particular graveyard an exception, though.	Oben ist noch ein Armeleutegrab, ohne Hof, aber mit Garnierung. Die Stöcke mit weißem Papier sind recht normal auf chinesischen Friedhöfen (weiß ist die Farbe der Trauer), auf diesem Hügel jedoch die Ausnahme.

Another semi-encased grave with a fully sealed courtyard.	Noch eine Beinahegruft, mit voll-versiegeltem Hof.

The above must have been quite nice, but not much to see, anymore.	Das hier muß mal recht nett ausgesehen haben. Nur sieht man nix mehr.

Stacked tombs.	Stapelgrüfte.

This one must have been from someone fairly wealthy, the most elaborate design I found there. But also almost completely overgrown.	Hier liegt wohl jemand, der recht wohlhabend war; die aufwendigste Konstruktion dort. Aber auch fast komplett überwachsen.

A pink wonder.	Ein rosa Wunder.

Another properly built courtyard, but you can't even see the actual grave anymore. Many of these courtyards do not appear to be very old. Therefore it is a bit strange that they look abandoned.	Wieder ein ausgebauter Hof, aber man kann das Grab nicht mal mehr sehen. Viele dieser Bauten waren anscheinend nicht sehr alt. Daher ist es seltsam, daß sie so verlassen erscheinen.

A row of tombstones. Now that looks almost like a cemetery in Europe. Overall, a very interesting hillside, definitely worth a visit. Not because of the 'Great Wall', but because of the graves.	Eine Reihe von Grabsteinen. Das sieht schon fast wie ein europäischer Friedhof aus. Insgesamt eine sehr interessante Hügelkette, definitiv einen Besuch wert. Nicht wegen der 'Großen Mauer', sondern wegen der Gräber.

A bit of life at the end. On my way back I encountered the above toad. Didn't see many in Huashi, probably because of the time of year. & that's the end of this graveyard shift.
