Hong Kong Island 2007

Finally, I had got the documents to apply for a work visa. Since you couldn't do that from inside China, I had to go to Hong Kong. The Polytechnic actually told me I would have to go to Germany for that, but luckily I had informed myself beforehand. So, I just took a comparably cheap flight to HK.	Endlich hatte ich die Dokumente bekommen, um ein Arbeitsvisum zu beantragen. Da das innerhalb Chinas nicht möglich war, mußte ich nach Hongkong. Das Polytechnikum hatte mir sogar gesagt, ich müsse dafür nach Deutschland,, aber ich hatte mich glücklicherweise informiert. Also nahm ich einen vergleichsweise günstigen Flug nach Hongkong.

This was the first & only time that I found a cheap hotel room on Hong Kong Island. So, after I had handed in the documents I had time to walk around the island a bit. In the beginning I stayed close to the coastline. (For some reason I am quite fascinated by the sea, although I don't really like water.)	Das war das erste & einzige Mal, daß ich auf Hong Kong Island ein billiges Hotel gefunden hatte. Daher hatte ich nach der Abgabe meiner Unterlagen satt Zeit, ein bißchen herumzulatschen. Am Anfang blieb ich nahe der Küste. (Aus irgendeinem Grund fasziniert mich die See, obwohl ich Wasser nicht wirklich mag.)

The above shows a kind of garbage collector. A number of such small boats are fishing out all kinds of stuff in the harbour area. Then there was this:	Oben sieht man ein Müllboot. Eine Anzahl davon sind unterwegs, um alles mögliche aus dem Hafenwasser zu fischen. & dann dies:

Quite a surprise for me. Usually I am the worst-dressed around. In Germany, in some supermarkets the personnel followed me around, because I obviously looked suspicious. But I actually found someone with a poorer taste. (Oh well, the rucksack is crap, but the rest is not that bad.)	Ziemliche Überraschung für mich. Normalerweise bin ich der Schlechtestangezogene. In Deutschland folgte mir sogar in manchen Märkten das Personal, weil ich offenbar verdächtig aussah. Diesmal hatte jemand einen schlechteren Geschmack. (Naja, der Rucksack ist Scheiße, aber der Rest eigentlich nicht so schlecht.)

As is often the case when I'm in HK, the weather wasn't great. It didn't rain (much), but the clouds were quite thick, while it was hot & humid. But, actually, I like Hong Kong when it's cloudy. Gives it a certain apocalyptic touch. That's probably just me, though, for I don't really like skyscrapers. IIRC, the views here show Victoria harbour.	Wie so oft, wenn ich in HK bin, war das Wetter nicht toll. Es regnete zwar nicht, aber es gab eine dichte Wolkendecke bei großer Schwüle. Aber eigentlich gefällt mir HK, wenn es wolkig ist. Wirkt dann leicht apokalyptisch. Liegt vielleicht nur an mir, da ich keine Wolkenkratzer mag. Die Ansicht zeigt übrigens den Victoria harbour, falls ich mich recht entsinne.

I do like Hong Kong, in spite of all the skyscrapers. It was a very nice fusion of East & West. Thanks to the CCP & particularly emperor Xi, this fusion is being destroyed. Sooner or later, Hong Kong will become just another faceless megalopolis. But it was 2007 & it was still very nice, with the cops more like British bobbies than like bullies without accountability.	Trotz der Wolkenkratzer mag ich Hongkong aber doch. Es war eine tolle Fusion von Ost & West. Dank der KPCh & besonders Kaiser Xi wird diese Fusion aber zerstört. Früher oder später wird HK zu einer weiteren gesichtslosen Megalopolis. Aber dies war 2007 & es war immer noch sehr nett, mit Polypen, die sich eher wie britische Bobby verhielten denn als rücksichtslose Rüpel.

The above is one of the common tour boats. If you look closely, you can see the bird of prey above it. That one came a bit closer later on & I could get the first proper shot of a flying bird of prey. Judging from the beak & tail, I guess it's a black kite.	Oben sieht man eins der üblichen Tourboote. Wer genau hinsieht, erkennt den Raubvogel darüber. Dieser kam später etwas näher, so daß ich mein erstes vernünftiges Bild eines Raubvogels im Flug machen konnte. Schnabel & Schwanz nach zu schätzen, handelt es sich um einen Schwarzmilan.

If you are a bird watcher (I'm not really one, I'm more of a walker with an interest in birds.), Hong Kong is a good place for you. Well, perhaps not that much anymore. Many birds seem to have suffered from all that tear gas the cops fired in recent months.	Für Vogelfreunde ist Hongkong vermutlich ein Muß. Oder vielleicht auch nicht mehr. Viele Vögel scheinen unter dem ganzen Tränengas gelitten zu haben, das die Polypen in den letzten Monaten verschossen haben.

Coming closer to Hong Kong Park, I noticed that all the trees seemed to have numbers. Germans are quite orderly & bureaucratic, but even in Germany, they don't number the trees. (Not that I know of, anyway.)	Als ich nahe am Hong Kong Park war, fiel mir auf, daß alle Bäume numeriert schienen. Deutsche sind ja schon ordentlich & bürokratisch, aber selbst in Deutschland sind mir numerierte Bäume noch nicht untergekommen.

Also interesting for me were those double-decker trams. Don't think, I had ever seen one before I came to HK Island.	Für mich auch interessant waren diese Doppeldeckerstraßenbahnen. Glaube nicht, daß ich jemals zuvor eine gesehen hatte.

Then I was in the Hong Kong Park. Considering that there is not that much room in HK, the park is of considerable size. & there are (were?) lots of birds. What's more, in the park is the Edward Youde Aviary, a heavenly place for bird lovers. Took a number of nice bird photos there, which will be in a separate post.	Dann war ich im Hong Kong Park. Angesichts des mangelnden Raums in HK hat der Park ordentliche Ausmaße. & es gibt (gab?) eine Menge Vögel. Noch dazu gibt es ein riesiges Vogelhaus, Himmel für Vogelliebhaber. Machte dort einige nette Bilder, die aber in einen separaten Beitrag kommen.

The above is the "Fighting SARS Memorial Architectural Scene". Part of which is in the title photo. The memorial depicts health workers who died in the fight against SARS. (Unlike China, Hong Kong learned its lessons from SARS.)	Oben sieht man das SARS-Denkmal im Park. Das Titelbild zeigt einen Teil davon. Das Denkmal ist jenen gewidmet, die im Kampf gegen SARS starben. (Anders als China, hat Hongkong auch die Lehren aus SARS gezogen.)

The Lippo Centre. Interesting design, but ... well ... skyscrapers.	Das Lippo Centre. Interessante Architektur, aber ... naja ... auch nur Wolkenkratzer.

A typical view of HK. Would be nicer without the highrises, but it has a certain flair, anyway.	Typischer Anblick in HK. Ohne Hochhäuser wäre es besser, hat aber auch so Flair.

& that shows that even in Hong Kong you will find proper Chinglish. The hotel I was in was a private one, very small, with extremely small rooms. When you sat on the toilet, your feet were in the bedroom. I'm pretty sure I made pictures of it, but I can't find them.	& das zeigt, daß man auch in Hongkong gutes Chinglish findet. Ich war in einem kleinen, privaten Hotel, mit extrem kleinen Zimmern. Wenn man auf der Toilette saß, waren die Füße im Schlafzimmer. Bin eigentlich sicher, daß ich Bilder gemacht habe, kann sie aber nicht finden.
