The gate is the Peace Gate, and is towards the second Yser Tower (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yser_Towers), the WW1 monument. The first tower was bombed after WW2, and the remains were used to build the gate. The monument is for peace, but is also often used as a symbol for the Flemish strive for independence.
