Ok so day 1 was deceptively easy-going. No traffic on the freeway, no problems with my laptop in class, no problems understanding the lesson, easy homework...
Today? Not so much.
Good thing I left early again because the traffic on the freeway was a bit heavier than yesterday. And that was without any accidents. So even though it was bad going there, it could have been much worse. Getting home was also a pain. There is so much construction around the freeway entrances downtown that I'll need to find a more dependable route home, or risk sitting in rush hour traffic when it gets to 120F (44C) outside. My car definitely won't survive that strain.
I learned quickly that CSS doesn't play nice when you make one small mistake in your tags. I spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out why my page wouldn't render properly and ended up falling behind by at least that much and probably missing some good notes too. Lesson learned: stop the lecture and don't be afraid to ask why my page doesn't look as nice as the instructor's page. After we took a break, I managed to clean everything up and be fine.
We did cover Flexbox today, which everyone says is the easiest way to build with responsive CSS. But I'm looking forward to learning CSS Grid because the little of it I've already seen seems more intuitive to me. I was able to build my first responsive webpage from scratch. Didn't have to copy and paste elements from someone else's site and bootleg it. My site won't win any design awards this year, but I'm proud that I could put that together on the second day of class.
I was also able to help other students with some parts and it is definitely true when they say that you learn SO MUCH MORE when you teach it to someone else. And it is a confidence booster for sure.
So at the end of day 2 I feel somewhat confident and ready for whatever comes up tomorrow. I even got in a couple of hours at the gym after class today. After working on the graveyard shift for almost 2 years I finally have the beginnings of a normal routine.
