He should have kicked the door or window in, if there was no other option.
What was he worst thing that could have happened to him over that? Perhaps, a neighbor may have taken him for a burglar and called the cops. So OK, the cops come, handcuff you, take you to jail for he night. That may not be the best night of your life, but that is still way better than death, IMHO.
