Who Invented
Public key cryptography was invented in 1976 by Whitfield Diffie and Martin Hellman.
For this reason, it is sometime called Diffie-Hellman encryption. It is also called asymmetric encryption because it uses two keys instead of one key (symmetric encryption).

Shannon is considered by many to be the father of mathematical cryptography. Shannon worked for several years at Bell Labs, and during his time there, he produced an article entitled “A mathematical theory of cryptography”. This article was written in 1945 and eventually was published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1945
Hashing
Hashing is a technique used in cryptography to encode information quickly using typical algorithms. Generally, an algorithm is applied to a string of text, and the resulting string becomes the “hash value”. This creates a “digital fingerprint” of the message, as the specific hash value is used to identify a specific message.
One of the oldest known text to contain one of the essential components of cryptography occurred some 4000 years ago in the Egyptian town of MENET KHUFU where the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the tomb of the nobleman KHNUMHOTEP II were written with a number of unusual symbols to confuse or obscure the meaning of the inscriptions. Today, cryptography is used all over the internet, and protocols like SHA, RSA 256, triple DES and others are helping to keep data, currencies, etc. secret from prying eyes.
